Phil began playing music at the age of nine, starting out on the cello. Whilst studying musical instrument making he was introduced to West African percussion and Samba. He then went on to study music at the School of Oriental and African Studies specialising in percussion.

He learnt Djembe with Yegue Mamadou Konate in Burkina Faso and he has worked in the UK with Kakatsitsi, Master Drummers of Ghana, Mosi Konde from Guinea (Kaira Kora) and Henri GaoBi from Cote D’Ivoire (ZaZa). He was the bass player for festival favourites Vibe Machine for about six years playing all across London and the South East and recording on the band's first two EP's.

Phil mainly now plays the electric and double bass performing afrobeat, jazz, tango, funk and latin styles.

He has travelled the world connecting with musicians through study and performance.
